Event: Horsemanship experiential workshop “You Can Do That Too” in Crete
Who is up for learning in Crete this summer? There is a notable opportunity for those of you who want to spend some of their summertime developing their horsemanship skills. The farm “With Horses Here and Now” is hosting this summer the natural-horsemanship instructor from Australia Stavros Steve Vergis. The concept of the seminar Most of the problems that we face with equines derive from the fact that they don’t trust us, they don’t respect us or are afraid of us. To build an appropriate rapport with our horse, first of all we should follow some groundwork programme and once we have done that, follow our riding programme. We should…

My last Inclusive Riding Session at Scropton
Hello! So, I have entered the last semester of my course, which means it’s MA Dissertation time! Many things end with the end of the spring semester at university and one of them was the equine therapy sessions organized by our Equestrian society. I’d like to share it with you not only because it’s the last one, but also it’s quite episodic! So, here we go, my phone screen read “9 June 2016, 09:00”. We set off to Scropton stables with our bus driver Mr. Paul and reached the stables soon enough for our usual biscuit splash. It was such fun to compare the time you’ve spent at Cripps Health…

Move, lazy horse!
I don’t know about you, but I have been loads of times on the back of a horse that won’t move. Not even an inch! The problem I face is, that eventually the whip has to land on someone’s bum and I can’t stand it. This happens especially at home. And it’s so frustrating. I still remember Pamelos bearing the pain of my new whip. An ex-racehorse, he might be used to it, but I could feel he was in pain. And still he wouldn’t move. I was so upset. Upset for the horse and disappointed with myself as a rider. I felt both as a bitch and a loser.…

Lesson at Trent Valley
Hello again from a busy lady! Urgh! MAs! Anyways, I want to share with you the story of my last riding lesson. I want to share it with you, because it was one of those lessons where you realize that focus is needed at sports! Well, and how beautiful a day in the yard can be if you’re focused! Oh, and how intelligent horses are! That day I had Rupert, a well-built, white, tall horse, with a lovely back. Like any equine, Rupert has his own character; he has his own mind about where you want to go. OK, and he’s intelligent. And maybe polite to other horses (aka, not…

An Engage session at Trent Valley
To my excitement, I received an e-mail earlier this week from the Uni’s equestrian society that I had been secured a place in the Engage session, which is organized now and then at Trent Valley Equestrian Centre. Our society is HUGE this year and, after struggling to secure a place in one of the lessons, I could not believe my luck! The much expected day arrived and, yes, the weather was perfect for riding! The sun was shining, there was zero wind and I couldn’t stop looking at the English nature through the minibus window. My father says that Crete is the best place in the world, the most beautiful…

Egvus: My home equestrian club
I have not written much about Yannis’ equestrian club, have I? Or, at least, I have not devoted any post to it yet. The name of the equestrian club where I go at home is called “EGVUS”, just outside of the centre of Ierapetra, Crete. It is situated just opposite to the Aghios Andreas beach, and is surrounded by a range of hotels. The facilities are very small, and advanced lessons are mostly carried out outside, in the surrounding roads and fields. The whole club is indoors, with a roof made of professional warmhouse materials. Also, inside you will find handmade furniture, and -yes- handmade wooden jumping fences. Yannis has…
