A Video of the Tennessee Walking Horse

Remember the post about the Tennessee Walking Horse? As we do with every breed, now it’s time to watch the Tennessee Walking Horse in action.  Amongst the thousands of videos that exist out there, I chose for you an informative video produced by the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ & Exhibitors’ Association. The video is in fact a compilation of clips which feature historical representatives of the breed. It shows us beautiful short films from past generations, when breeding and training a horse was a small farmer’s business and had little relevance to today’s profit-hunting and the extended exploitation and abuse. * Watch carefully how natural and relaxed horses and riders…

    The Tennessee Walking Horse

Hello, dear people! It’s been long since the last time I presented an equine breed, hasn’t it? So, I thought I should write about the famous Tennessee Walking Horse! The Tennessee Walking Horse is an American breed, founded in Middle Tennessee. Its genetics is a mixture of the Narragansett, the Canadian Pacer, the Standardbred, the Thoroughbred, the Morgan and the American Saddlebred. Weighing between 900 and 1200 pounds, the Tennessee Walking Horse is considered to be a light equine breed. It was initially bred as a working horse, but in the modern times it is considered a recreational mount, because, except for its gentle disposition and calm, manageable temperament, it also offers…

    The Thoroughbred

The Thoroughbred or Equus Ferus Caballus, is a British equine breed which is mostly known as a racing breed. The term thoroughbred is often erroneously referred to as breed purity, but actually, it only describes this specific breed. The Thoroughbred was developed in England in the early years of the 17th century, by breeding three oriental sires imported to the country from the Mediterranean Middle East (namely the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian and the Byerly Turk) . In 1791, an Englishman named James Weatherby, through private research managed to publish the first volume of the General Stud Book for Thoroughbreds; he had managed to publish himself six volumes in…

Documentary: Power In The Blood – The Story of The Irish Thoroughbred

I watched tonight an interesting documentary on the most popular breed for racing, the Irish thoroughbred. The documentary looks into the multi-million racing industry, gives us a glimpse of how hefty the price of a racehorse can be and makes sure that we know that only a small percentage of these horses will actually become champions, no matter their bloodline. The documentary also shows what makes this breed -which has been created by humans specifically for racing- run so fast and be so strong. Experts explain the role that the size and weight of the vital organs play in the development of a speed rate of 45 miles/h in a little…

    Videos of Marwari horses

Hi! As it has been a practice to escort our breed posts with videos that feature the respective horses in action. I searched on Vimeo (sorry, YouTube, but Vimeo is by far better), and I found two HD videos of Marwari horses. The first video shows a skilled Indian rider riding the horse. Watch how steady the horse is and how gracefully it moves. The ease with which that horse climbs up and down even the steepest slopes is impressive as well. The second video comes from a hack in India. I love the trail and also the movement of the horses.   So, how do you find this breed?…

    The Aravani

The Aravani is a Greek native horse, which has been used for centuries by the Greek people all over the Greek space. Origin In 2000 B.C., the Dorians migrated to Greece with their own equines from the steppes. Upon their passing through the area of Thessalia, they bred those equines with the local horses, which they took with them. This is how the ancestors of the Aravani species were born. Later in time, the Aravani horses were mixed with Persian, Arabian, Turkish and Roman breeds. Especially the Arabic characteristics are dominant in the genetic material of this breed. Uses Before the 1960, when the mechanization of agriculture began in…
