The charity have been in heavy and urgent need of water for the over 20 equines they protect. I am excited to see that they have exceeded their crowdfunding goal and that now they are expecting the tanks and fittings that they have ordered. 					<description><![CDATA[In some places, people take water for granted. In others, they are desperate to save it. I was born and raised in a place where water shortage is always a problem and has to be faced on an individual level; &#8220;close the tap&#8221;, &#8220;don&#8217;t wash more often than twice a week&#8221;, &#8220;don&#8217;t handwash the car&#8221;, &#8220;look how much water you&#8217;ve used to boil a portion of spaghetti&#8221;, &#8220;look how much water you&#8217;ve boiled to make just one cup of tea&#8221;, &#8220;I&#8217;ll bring you the water bill and have you pay it&#8221; and other &#8220;don&#8217;t&#8221; and &#8220;look at what you&#8217;ve done&#8221; phrases. People do whatever possible to save water, and the authorities do the same. Southern Crete, with sunshine 360 days a year, is one of the driest areas in Crete and the problem of water shortage is particularly severe from early June to late October. The oxymoron is that, despite the water shortage, we still have to water the thousands of hectares of irrigated land to feed the rest of Greece. And we have some animals to water too. To resolve this problem, the local authorities in Ierapetra have established a schedule of water usage for agricultural purposes. Each registered consumer can water their plants on specific days, in specific hours. Now, add 35-40 celsius heat and imagine yourself trying to irrigate and ride in my hometown during this season. The charity Walk with Donkeys, placed up in the mountains, with little access to running water, and having to look after 22 retired equines at the moment, struggle to secure the water they need to cover the animals&#8217; daily needs in water. They have to fetch water from the local spring using water tanks. But, with the number of their proteges increased this year, the equipment that they already have is not enough. The need to increase the watering equipment is major and urgent and, with the current financial crisis in Greece, finding adequate funds for this purpose is not the simplest thing in the world&#8230; For this purpose, the charity have launched a crowdfunding project and they ask from all of us some generosity, to reach their goal of 1,000 euros, which will buy three water tanks with the equipment needed to install them. 					<description><![CDATA[I have received a plea from the owners of the charity &#8220;Walk with the Donkeys Sanctuary&#8221; about two horses -a young stallion and a filly- found on their premises near Anatoli, Ierapetra. They arrived 10 days ago and, despite the hard efforts to find the owner, they are still to show up and pick up their equines. The horses are in very good condition, which makes us assume that they have not been abandoned, but rather they must have escaped from the owner&#8217;s premises. Yet just in case and no offence, please bear in mind that charities, despite their good intentions, are not dumping points for pets. Those people are happy to help, but people who are happy to donate some money are quite scarce in Greece at the moment, and I don&#8217;t know of anyone -charity or individual- who has ever been able to maintain an equine for free. So let us not take advantage of the philanthropy of an animal charity. If you feel that you can no longer upkeep your pet (whatever the species), please contact directly the charity, a vet or any professional associated with that species for help. And bear in mind very seriously that nobody has the right to enforce on other people their own responsibilities when it comes to animal maintenance. That said, here are the pictures of the horses. 					<description><![CDATA[A disturbing discovery was made by members of the Panhellenic Animal Welfare and Environmental Federation in the district of Heraklion in the Greek island of Crete, when they found tens of equine corpses (horses and donkeys), in the area surrounding a catering business. Policemen had discovered earlier two donkeys in a horrendous situation, hardly able to stand and with their furs fallen off. Based on the reports, it is estimated that the donkeys have been in this condition for at least six months. The man who owns the business claimed that the donkeys had been abandoned and he had collected them for treatment. But nobody believed him, as the federation had received reports about tens of equine corpses and skeletons in the surrounding area. In an effort to rescue the surviving equines which remained in the hands of the abuser, the federation took pictures from the area where the corpses had been found and the police proceeded to his arrest last Monday, 3 August. The man&#8217;s court hearing has been postponed. Treatment for the surviving equines has been arranged.
