Enquiry: Why do ladies wear huge hats with flora at racing events?

Here is one more enquiry. I do not understand why most women wear huge hats with flowers and fruit on the top. I understand that it gets sunny etc. But what are fruit and flowers for? Horsey snacks? How has this trend been established?

    I think it might have started out as being one of those things where you needed to be covered up and has now just become tradition. Such as in some of the areas at Royal Ascot racing, women must have shoulders covered and a minimum length on hem line. It is now tradition and the dress code for many race tracks.
