Today, the Society is Australia’s largest equine recreational and pleasure association, with a loyal and growing membership of approximately 8,500 individuals and has in excess of 200,000 horses with the Society. The breed standard requires that the Australian Stock Horse should be well-proportioned, symmetrical, and sound. The ideal height is between 14 and 16 hands, and any solid colour is acceptable. The Australian Stock Horse is known for its versatility and ability to perform in a wide range of disciplines. It is especially popular in campdrafting, a sport that involves cutting out a beast from a herd and guiding it around a course. The Australian Stock Horse is also used for polo, show jumping, dressage, endurance riding, trail riding, and pleasure riding. Yet, it is still valued as a working horse by stockmen and stockwomen throughout Australia. The Australian Stock Horse is not only a talented athlete, but also a loyal companion. 					<description><![CDATA[Over the years, I have met people from all over the world through work and education. And I&#8217;ve learned that each nation has its own moral qualities and always one of them is more prominent than the others, one that dominates the nations&#8217; way of thinking and living, one that makes you a member of this ethnic family; one that simply distinguishes your nationality from others. For example, the British are distinguished by their courtesy, the Germans by their organizational skills, the Italians&#160;by their love for romance, the Russians&#160;by their seriousness, the Albanians&#160;by their hard work.&#160;These moral qualities -positive stereotypes that those people themselves admit- derive from the experiences of each ethnic group, the location where it&#8217;s based, its contact with other nations. Similarly, the Greeks are distinguished by philotimo. A word that means so many different things and that&#8217;s why it does not exist in any other language except for Greek. It exists exclusively in the Greek vocabulary&#160;because its meaning is perhaps too special and too complex for us to explain to someone who is not Greek. But one thing is certain; this is our common quality, this is how the Greeks recognize each other. Even if one of your parents or grandparents is Greek, we will still find out that you have a Greek background, because you have been raised with philotimo. It is indispensable, an integral part of our existence which follows us wherever we go. As I said above, it&#8217;s difficult to describe philotimo, but I&#8217;ll do my best. In any way, we begin to live by philotimo before we even know the word. I learned the word when I was a senior in primary school, although I learned to live by it when I was a toddler. Philotimo means self-sacrifice for the sake of others or for the sake of your moral principles (which include the &#8220;other&#8221; anyway), to stop what you are doing to do a favor to someone, to be there to advise, protect, advocate, to show respect. There is no space for distinctions here; we consider philotimo necessary while dealing either with friends or enemies. It doesn&#8217;t matter how you will do it, but death is a method as well. Philotimo is reflected on our military oath as well, which demands that the soldiers are prepared to die defending their flags. Actually, they are expected to defend them as they die as well (&#8220;I swear&#8230;to defend with faith and dedication the flags until my last blood drop and not to abandon them or part myself from them&#8221;). The military history has shown that the Greeks are prepared to die fighting for an ally as well. And contemporary people believe that philotimo&#160;is behind this. Philotimo is a matter of honor. The word itself means love for honor. The way a Greek sees it, one does not deserve to live if they don&#8217;t have philotimo. Not having it brings trouble in school and family and in general, in all sectors of our social life. A person of Greek descent who does not have philotimo is seen as a shame for their family and for themselves. They are not treated quite as equal in the Greek society we could say. But I&#8217;ve described enough. I&#8217;ve already said that philotimo is too complicated for someone to fully explain, because it&#8217;s simply a Greek&#8217;s nature. 					<description><![CDATA[I have not written much about Yannis&#8217; equestrian club, have I? Or, at least, I have not devoted any post to it yet. The name of the equestrian club where I go at home is called &#8220;EGVUS&#8221;, just outside of the centre of Ierapetra, Crete. It is situated just opposite to the Aghios Andreas beach, and is surrounded by a range of hotels. The facilities are very small, and advanced lessons are mostly carried out outside, in the surrounding roads and fields. The whole club is indoors, with a roof made of professional warmhouse materials. Also, inside you will find handmade furniture, and -yes- handmade wooden jumping fences. Yannis has set up the whole thing himself, with his own hands, and with some help from Ali, his helper. The stables -also made by Yannis- are just besides the arena and accommodate ten horses for now. A proportion of them are ex-racing horses from the Athens racecourse. Also, there are two miniature horses trained for equine therapy. But all his equine friends are trained for this; not to move if your heartbeat is high. The diet of Yannis&#8217; horses is varied and includes hay, mixes and local vegetation. Southern Crete is a quite dry place, therefore there is little fresh grass to graze here, unlike areas of central and northern Europe. Thus, grazing here is thick and dry and must be accompanied with a lot of water. Lessons with Yannis are worth their money, as he wants his pupils to know everything about horses and how to handle them; historical and biological information, complete tacking-untacking, grooming, tying, leading, feeding, watering, and, of course, riding! Yannis&#8217; pupils must be competent both with handling and riding, hence leading tourists on hacks and preparing the horses for hacks and lessons is a mandatory part of the training. If you go to Crete for holidays, a visit to EGVUS is worth to do. You will be able to ride in the arena, go hacking, do lessons, and&#8230; treat as many horses as you like! If you have kids, then this is the place to take them, because of the colorful environment, the children who spend their free time helping out, the friendly ponies and the informative character of the walks in the arena. And if you like horses but are too scared to approach them, why not enjoying a beverage or snack while watching others having fun or working? 					<description><![CDATA[The equestrian club of the Sutton Bonington campus of the University of Nottingham has been involved in the Mars (the brand, not the planet!) Milk Play Fund, in order to fund its horseball activities and represent the university in British national university championships. The club is in urgent need of equipment and money to fund their lessons and horse training and have entered the scheme for a small grant. One thousand pounds might not sound enough for the size of their project, but &#8220;every little helps&#8221;, as the motto of a British supermarket chain says. Sutton Bonington is an isolated campus hosting a number of agronomic, veterinarian and food science schools. Students&#8217; access to the university&#8217;s main campus or organised equestrian clubs is rather difficult and they need to build their own training facilities and pay for their instructors and the schooling of their horses, for their right to compete with minimum facility and technical obstacles, like all other youths of their age. The Milk Play Fund is a scheme offered by Mars Incorporated to fund individuals, teams and clubs practicing any sport. A grant of 1,000 British pounds is offered every month and one of 300 pounds every week to the entries that get the most votes. These young people might not need this grant, if they didn&#8217;t have to pay 9,000 British pounds per year in tuition fees, plus rent and other living costs.
