Documentary: Power In The Blood – The Story of The Irish Thoroughbred
I watched tonight an interesting documentary on the most popular breed for racing, the Irish thoroughbred. The documentary looks into the multi-million racing industry, gives us a glimpse of how hefty the price of a racehorse can be and makes sure that we know that only a small percentage of these horses will actually become champions, no matter their bloodline. The documentary also shows what makes this breed -which has been created by humans specifically for racing- run so fast and be so strong. Experts explain the role that the size and weight of the vital organs play in the development of a speed rate of 45 miles/h in a little…

Move, lazy horse!
I don’t know about you, but I have been loads of times on the back of a horse that won’t move. Not even an inch! The problem I face is, that eventually the whip has to land on someone’s bum and I can’t stand it. This happens especially at home. And it’s so frustrating. I still remember Pamelos bearing the pain of my new whip. An ex-racehorse, he might be used to it, but I could feel he was in pain. And still he wouldn’t move. I was so upset. Upset for the horse and disappointed with myself as a rider. I felt both as a bitch and a loser.…

Videos of Marwari horses
Hi! As it has been a practice to escort our breed posts with videos that feature the respective horses in action. I searched on Vimeo (sorry, YouTube, but Vimeo is by far better), and I found two HD videos of Marwari horses. The first video shows a skilled Indian rider riding the horse. Watch how steady the horse is and how gracefully it moves. The ease with which that horse climbs up and down even the steepest slopes is impressive as well. The second video comes from a hack in India. I love the trail and also the movement of the horses. So, how do you find this breed?…

Under the Spell of Horses – Documentary
I love documentaries! All sorts of them! The documentaries that I find particularly charming, though, are those which show the cultural heritage of a nation. And if the theme is horses, then things get more exciting! I watched “Under the Spell of Horses: India” on YouTube last night. The film was about the native Indian equine breed Marwari. This breed has been used in wars and traditional events; it is decorated and made to dance to ethnic music. Horses are worshiped like gods in the multitheistic Indian society and people look for specific characteristics on the horse they are about to buy, because they believe that such characteristics bring luck to the…

A rare trumpet duet!
No matter how fast our state is collapsing, we the Greeks will never lose our morale and humor! Guaranteed! Below there’s a video from the Greek countryside, with a donkey “singing” along with the sound of a trumpet! I’m not sure whether this lovely equine wanted to express his irritation or tried indeed to produce some art; in either case, the result is a hilarious duet that will keep your mood at its best for at least a week!!! To laugh as much as I did watch below or click here

Steering a horse using your seat
As I have written in previous posts, I can’t get why I need to try to push a 600kg beast with my lower leg and pull the reign towards the same direction. I can’t do it and it feels abnormal to me. At home, I began to learn to use my body, in general, to make the horse go where I want him to go.And if I needed to use my leg as well, I would use it when I wanted to steer a bit sharply. The sharper the turn, the sharper the push, which would be made with the leg which is on the side I want to travel towards.…
