What is side saddle?
Have you ever tried to ride sidesaddle? Did you know that sidesaddle is the favorite riding style of Queen Elizabeth II? If not, now you do!My curiosity was triggered by the relevant article on Horse Collaborative “Side Saddle Resurgence and the Downton Abbey Effect”, so I wanted to know more. Side saddle is a type of riding which requires the special type of saddle which provides the rider with the ability to ride with both legs on one side of the equine. We find the roots of side saddle in the antiquity, illustrated on ancient Greek vases, sculptures and Celtic stones. Side saddle was developed in Europe in the Middle Ages…

Equine Therapy at Scorpton
I don’t know about you, but, from January onwards, all I think about is horses and… riding them, of course! There’s more and more sunshine in Nottinghamshire and the trips to the yards become more pleasant, as I look through at the bright green nature through the window. As the drive goes, you can see the sun rays teasing the branches of the trees that are going to wake up soon, or touching the waters of Trent river. England is a country poor of sunshine. But exactly this shortage makes the sunshine so beautiful and valuable. In such a mood I boarded on the minibus that would take us…

Lesson at Trent Valley
Hello again from a busy lady! Urgh! MAs! Anyways, I want to share with you the story of my last riding lesson. I want to share it with you, because it was one of those lessons where you realize that focus is needed at sports! Well, and how beautiful a day in the yard can be if you’re focused! Oh, and how intelligent horses are! That day I had Rupert, a well-built, white, tall horse, with a lovely back. Like any equine, Rupert has his own character; he has his own mind about where you want to go. OK, and he’s intelligent. And maybe polite to other horses (aka, not…

An Engage session at Trent Valley
To my excitement, I received an e-mail earlier this week from the Uni’s equestrian society that I had been secured a place in the Engage session, which is organized now and then at Trent Valley Equestrian Centre. Our society is HUGE this year and, after struggling to secure a place in one of the lessons, I could not believe my luck! The much expected day arrived and, yes, the weather was perfect for riding! The sun was shining, there was zero wind and I couldn’t stop looking at the English nature through the minibus window. My father says that Crete is the best place in the world, the most beautiful…

How many calories we burn at the barn!
More workouts, improved fitness and weight loss are probably the most popular new-year resolutions. So, it’s time for you to be proud, dear equestrians! Because, yes, you have all that with no extra effort! Yannis told me once that one hour of riding in walk equals eight hours of walking on foot, so, you can see the miracles equestrianism does! Personally I love the fact that horse-riding is one of the sports that tone and strengthen your muscles, instead of turning you into a protein-obsessed monster! In any case, if you want to have a really good workout, get yourself busy in a barn! Tonight I watched a fun video…

Flash – The 1997 movie
I watched recently the Disney movie “Flash”, released in 1997. It is the moving story of a child which, after getting his dream horse, has to face alone a series of family hardships, such as his grandmother’s death and confiscation of his home soon after that . The boy decides to sell his horse to make ends meet and live in the stables of the wealthy businessman who bought him. The real action begins when the boy saves his horse from being shot and begins a long journey on horseback to meet his father in New York city. A nice movie for the whole family focusing on story rather than…
